Non-Adhesive Film

PDLC film for integration during glass lamination. A manufacturing component for new smart-glass panels, rather than a peel-and-stick retrofit film.

Non-adhesive PDLC film is a switchable privacy component intended to be enclosed within a glass laminate. Unlike self-adhesive smart film, it is not supplied as a peel-and-stick surface upgrade for existing windows. It forms part of a planned glass-manufacturing process.

This route is relevant to glass processors and projects that need newly manufactured smart-glass panels. SEG | SMARTEGLASS helps coordinate requirements in Dubai and the UAE, including whether the scope calls for film supply or complete laminated smart glass ready for installation.

What it gives you

  • A switchable layer for integration within new laminated glass
  • Protected active material in the completed glass construction
  • Panel geometry and electrical connections planned before manufacture
  • Material compatibility reviewed with the glass processor
  • Clear distinction between component supply and finished glazing

How it works

The film contains a PDLC layer that changes light scattering when the approved electrical supply is applied. In a standard system, the finished panel appears frosted without power and clearer when energised. The optical result also depends on the glass sheets, interlayers and processing quality.

Lamination requires compatibility between the film, interlayer materials and processing conditions. Temperature, pressure, handling and electrical connection details must follow the selected manufacturer's instructions. A general-purpose lamination recipe should not be assumed to suit every PDLC film.

Before procurement, agree the film dimensions, busbar positions, edge allowances and electrical requirements with the processor. Finished panels need inspection and switching checks before delivery. If you are a villa owner or fit-out contractor without a glass-processing scope, asking for complete laminated smart glass will usually make the supply responsibilities clearer.

Non-Adhesive Film FAQs

Practical answers to help you plan your project.

Can non-adhesive film be stuck onto an existing window?

It is intended for integration during glass lamination, not ordinary surface application. For an existing pane, ask about self-adhesive smart film and a suitability assessment.

Who normally specifies non-adhesive PDLC film?

Glass processors, façade or glazing teams and designers coordinating newly manufactured smart glass may specify it. End users can instead request a complete laminated panel with installation.

Can any glass laminator process the film?

The processor needs a suitable process and confirmed compatibility with the chosen film and interlayer. Manufacturer guidance and appropriate trials are important before producing project panels.

Does the film determine the final glass thickness?

No. The glass sheets and interlayers are selected around structural, fixing and application requirements. The active film is one component within that overall build-up.

What details are needed for a supply enquiry?

Send the panel schedule, intended glass build-up, processor details, required quantities and UAE delivery location. Also identify busbar positions, control requirements and whether finished glazing is needed.

Is non-adhesive PDLC film the same as solar-control film?

No. PDLC is primarily used for switchable visual privacy. A solar-control target needs separate assessment of the glazing's verified light and solar performance.
