How it works
An SPD layer contains small suspended particles. An applied electrical signal changes their alignment and the amount of light passing through the layer. Standard SPD systems rest in a darker state without power and become lighter when energised. The available tint range and intermediate settings depend on the selected film and controller.
Tint is only one part of façade performance. Glass build-up, coatings, insulation, orientation and shading all influence the result. A darker appearance does not by itself establish a heat-reduction percentage or an energy saving. For exterior use, the proposed assembly must be assessed for the project's thermal, structural and weather requirements.
At the design stage, identify the panes to be controlled together and the position of the power supplies. Share elevation drawings, orientation and the main concern, whether it is glare on screens, brightness or solar exposure. This helps establish whether SPD is appropriate and what information is needed from the glazing supplier.

Is SPD the same as PDLC privacy glass?
No. SPD adjusts tint to manage light, while standard PDLC switches between a clearer and a frosted appearance. For bathroom or meeting-room visual privacy, discuss PDLC rather than assuming a dark SPD tint will provide the same result.
Does SPD smart glass become completely transparent?
Its lightest state still has the optical characteristics of the selected system. Review transmission data and a sample to understand tint colour and appearance before specifying it.
Will SPD reduce air-conditioning costs in Dubai?
A saving cannot be promised from the product name alone. Any energy assessment needs the actual glazing values, building orientation, area and operating conditions. Ask for performance data for the complete proposed assembly.
Can SPD be used for skylights?
It may be suitable in a purpose-designed roof-glazing assembly. Overhead safety, structural support, thermal behaviour, weather sealing and access for maintenance must be checked for the specific installation.
What happens to SPD glass during a power cut?
